五大力船

From Yukio Nakayama’s blog site, edowasen.wordpress.com. He doesn’t write much, but does show some photos of his beautiful models, with short descriptions. The site is all in Japanese, so you might have a bit of trouble navigating if you don’t know Japanese or have any way of translating.

But, here is a vessel that I’ve been interested in for a long time. It is a smaller transport called a Godairikisen (go-dye-ree-kee-sen). It’s a transport designed with a shallow draft, allowing it to navigate up rivers.

According to Nakayama-san’s description, it was used to carry firewood, etc. to Edo from Bōsō, which is the peninsula across the bay.
